A Great Story About an American Military Family

This column* by Jeff Edwards (from Military.com) is a wonderful story about an American military family that lost a son in Iraq. It also poses an important question to the American public. That question is whether or not we believe in values worth dying for. If you look at America today, one would doubt that we do, unlike in World War II. Mr. Edwards also provides an interesting example of how the MSM treats those military families who do not advance their anti-war agenda.

Hillary Clinton Shows Her True Colors...Again

This article* from the Washington Post shows a typical Hillary Clinton response to a politically unpopular issue. Sen. Clinton was quoted as saying that she wants the U.S. out of Iraq before Bush leaves office in January 2009. When pressed on her support the Iraq War Resolution in 2003, Clinton said, "I am going to level with you, the president has said this is going to be left to his successor...I think it is the height of irresponsibility and I really resent it." Of course you resent it Hillary, because you plan on being in White House in '09 and really don't want to have to make tough decisions that might upset someone. This goes back to my blog** on Sen. Clinton declaring her candidacy for president. As I said then and I say now, I would rather have a president - man or woman - who makes decisions based on their experience, "gut" instinct, and what they believe is for the good of the country, rather than some sycophantic suck-up who needs a focus group to tell he/she what to do.

Hillary also claimed that she would "get serious" about Osama Bin Laden. What does she think the NATO and American troops are doing in Afghanistan? Sitting on their butts drinking coffee and tea and debating the finer points of art? I think not. The American people and politicos need to realize the OBL is not the only bad guy out there and that the terrorist will not stop fighting just because we kill OBL. Only when we get all of them will we finish the job. Sen. Clinton also talked about her strategy of "phased redeployment" from Iraq. What happened to "I'm in and I'm in to win." As a rebuttal to Hillary, I am linking this piece
*** written by Oliver North. I know that people who read this post may have very different opinions about the man, but this a great piece that I think illustrates the mindset of our military in Iraq.

Handcuffing the National Guard

Good for the Arizona state legislature of investigating this brazen confrontation* (in our territory) committed by Mexican gunmen against our National Guard Troops. On January 3rd, an outpost of four National Guard troops was approached by a group of six to eight gunmen. The article does not indicate the group’s armaments, but does say that they were outfitted with ballistic vests. We can logically assume, that the gunmen were equipped with assault rifles, since only an idiot would threaten a Guard border post armed with anything less. The National Guard soldiers withdrew from the area and attempted to track the group, but later lost contact with the gunmen. The Arizona Homeland Security Committee is investigating this incident, seeking to find out why the National Guard withdrew from the area and Maj. Gen. David Rataczak is to testify before the committee today.

Rep. Steve Gallardo (Democrat) claimed that immigration hardliners would use Maj. Gen. Rataczak's testimony to push their own agenda. My view on it? GOOD! Frankly, I think the National Guard troops stationed on the border would love to able to fight back and help stem the tide of illegal immigration. As of now, their orders are only to observe, not to apprehend (if that was my situation that would drive me nuts). They are only authorized to call illegal immigrant sightings into the Border Security Teams, which of course then have to arrive and apprehend the illegal immigrants. But by the time those teams arrive, the illegal immigrants have moved on and finding them again is extremely difficult. Hopefully, this investigation by the state Arizona can use the testimony of Maj. Gen. Rataczak to loosen the handcuffs placed on them. Handcuffs that only exist for political reasons and impair the ability of our National Guard to function and fulfll their job of protecting the border.

"Baghdad is Key"...Couldn't Agree More

This op-ed* by Stephen J. Hadley, the President's National Security Advisor pretty much says it all. In my "Review of Fiasco"** blog, I said that I would write about counterinsurgency tactics, a topic which I will be tying to General Petraeus' new strategy for Iraq. I will use that posting as a rebuttal to all of the doubters who say that we should pack up and leave. I only mention this because Hadley mentions some key parts of Petraeus' strategy, and I think we will all profit from understanding it more fully. Hopefully my blog will help with that.

Church Defense

It seems that Church's have to put up with a lot today. If they are not battling the ACLU in court, then they defending themselves from idiots* like these folks. In Columbus Ohio two individuals walked into Christ the King Catholic Church on Sunday morning and proceeded to grab women's purses. During the robbery one of the individuals displayed a handgun and, genius that he was, announced that, "This is a robbery." My good man, however would the parishioners have guessed, other than the fact you were already grabbing their money. Fortunately, the parishioners did not stand for this criminal act and promptly tackled the gunman and chased his accomplice out of the church. Both thugs were then arrested by police, whom other parishioners had called to the scene. This is great example of the common folk not taking any crap from a couple of thugs and fighting back. This is what we need to do to all those criminals who victimize us. If only Maryland's gun laws weren't so restrictive...

Maryland's Juvenile Detention System

This posting concerns the extremely difficult job that staffers have at juvenile correctional facilities, which are now euphemistically referred to as "alternative schools." This article* from the Baltimore Sun is about the death of juvenile offender Isaiah Simmons III, who was housed at privately run Bowling Brooke Preparatory School near Westminster, MD. Simmons' case is very familiar. After Simmons allegedly threatened to harm other students and school employees, staffers attempted to restrain him. In that process Simmons collapsed, went into cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead at Carroll Hospital Center. The investigation into Isaiah Simmons III's death is still ongoing, and the state medical examiner office has found no apparent trauma on Simmons' body. Before I continue writing, I would like to say that I am sorry for the loss of the Simmons family, but I would also like to outline some of the impossible circumstances that staffers at juvenile detention facilities face.

To properly illustrate this, let's honestly state what juvenile detention facilities are and their purpose. First, "juvie" is essentially prison for minors and there is just no nice, PC way to say it or to get around that fact. If you end up in "juvie" you have already started down that long, dangerous road of a career criminal. Isaiah Simmons III was sent to Bowling Brook because he was charged, and convicted, of using box cutters to rob another teenager of their cell phone in Baltimore during the month of February. That is the kind of individual who ends up in juvenile detention facilities. As I mentioned above, the investigation into Simmons' death is ongoing, but his family is already sounding off. Simmons' mother was quoted as saying that, "I am trusting in the Lord that the truth will come out...So it won't happen to another child. They need to look over their policies. They need to be retrained." Again, I will say that I am sorry for her loss, but I will disagree with her when she says, "They need to be retrained."

Again, I will also state the happy, peaceful, gentle individuals do not end up at juvenile facilities. The staff in these facilities has to be able to defend themselves along with other students from an attack by another juvenile offender. They must be trained to subdue unruly offenders, otherwise it will be the inmates running the asylum. I will go back to my point that if one ends up in "juvie" they have started the long, dangerous road toward criminality. Simmons was convicted of armed robbery (an act which takes a hardened mind toward violence on others) and he also leaves behind a 22-month old baby girl, the mother of which is 15. This is how so many career criminals begin their journey. And staffers in "juvie" are most likely outnumbered by these individuals. I would certainly want to be trained in self-defense if that was my work environment. To further illustrate my point, the Sun article goes on to say that Simmons' death comes after there was a brawl among twelve girls which required the State Police to break up.

Apparently the girls started the fight over a candy bar during the dinner hour, and that they, "ripped out light fixtures and fire sprinklers...causing water and other damage." Imagine if that is your work environment, and you are not allowed to physically touch the “students”. I don't think Bowling Brook would last long as a juvenile detention facility if that would become their new policy. No one would work there because the inmates would be running the asylum.

MSM Job Cuts

This article* from MSBC.com continues the narration of the slow demise of the MSM in print. The article states that that American newspapers job cuts surged 88%, from 9,453 cut two years ago to 17,809 from last year. These cuts come as the MSM in print is attempting to keep up with the internet as a source for news and entertainment. Newspapers are not the only one's making cuts, as NBC and Time Warner's AOL unit were also overhauling their operations. So apparently when the MSM needs to make job cuts to increase their profits or stay in business its okay, but when other businesses perform those same actions it is the work of evil CEOs. Thomas Sowell** had an interesting column about the pay of CEOs yesterday, which I have linked. Sowell writes that people commonly write off CEOs big paychecks as simple greed. I still believe that greed can be a driving force in mankind’s behavior --- given the fallibility of human nature with money and power --- but I agree with Sowell when he writes that in a free market economy, you are "worth" however much someone will pay you to work for them.

State of the Union Address 07

I caught part of President Bush's State of the Union Address tonight and most of what I watched was related to the Iraq War. Tomorrow I shall post my observations on Bush's speech along with my thoughts Jim Webb's rebuttal for the Democratic Party. I need to play catchup and read through four of five articles so I don't sound (or write?) like an idiot. I will also issue my own rebuttal to Jim Webb by sounding off on General David Petraeus and why I have confidence his ability to bring true victory in Iraq.

Al-Sadr Tries to Weasel Out

Muqtada Al-Sadr is attempting to weasel his way out of getting his butt kicked. In this article from MSNBC.com it says that Al-Sadr has ordered what Shiite politicians he controls to end a two-month boycott of the Iraqi Parliament. Such a different tune from the one he was singing earlier, with the whole "let the kill me for I am a martyr" crap. Hopefully Al-Sadr's attempt to stave of an a strike force of Iraqi and U.S. troops will be unsuccessful, seeing as Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malaki has finally stopped protecting the Mahdi Army. Apparently Al-Malaki was convinced by new U.S. intel that the Shiite death squads that have been raising hell (along with the Sunni insurgents) belong to the Mahdi Army. Al-Malaki needs to show some backbone and allow the offensive against Sadr City to continue. Only then will people really believe that Nouri Al-Malaki is his own man and not the political pawn of some power hungry nut.

Hugo Chavez

I saw this article from MSNBC.com this morning. The headline reads "Chavez tells U.S. government: ‘Go to hell’." First off let me assure Mr. Chavez that the feeling is mutual. We in the United States have no respect for a socialist dictator such as you. Mr. Chavez claims that freedom is on the march in Venezuela and criticizes the U.S. for imperialism, etc. And yet Mr. Chavez continues the state takeover of companies who oppose him and the nationalization of the natural resource industry. Those actions don't even take into account that the Venezuelan National Assembly is expected to pass a law that would enable Mr. Chavez to "legislate by decree." Of course the National Assembly is controlled by the dictator's political allies who in their infinite wisdom, recognizing the dangers of above law, wrote that Mr. Chavez can only "legislate by decree" for eighteen months. So much for idea that the nation’s politicians being the best and brightest.

Clinton Declares Candidacy for Presidency...Everybody Run!

Well here it is, the news we have all been waiting for. Hillary Clinton has now declared that she will run for President of the United Sates in 2008. Maybe this will dampen what Mike Ghallager describes as "Obamania". I turned NBC and CBS news tonight (yes I still do that) and I swear that I heard Hillary's name a dozen times in three minutes. The network news breathlessly showed Hillary "standing up" (while sitting down) to former SecDef Don Rumsfeld, and Hilary's live interview, in which she stated that she wanted to put a cap on troops in Iraq, and begin a "phased withdrawl" out of Iraq. And yet she claims on her website that she was quoted as saying that she wants the Iraq War to come to a "right end," whatever that means in Hil-speak. I have linked campaign promises from her website. I could spend the whole night amusing myself by cracking some lame jokes at her expense, but for your sake I will try to contain myself.

First off, who would be the first lady if Hillary was president? Perhaps John Kerry could be a fill in (when he returns from helping troops stuck in Iraq), if Hillary's ego wasn't big enough for both jobs. Before I go any further I promise you that I won't repeat her campaign slogan "I'm in. And I'm in to win" ad infinatum. I wonder how much she had to pay someone to come up with that slogan? I mean after the city of Baltimore paid some advertising firm $500,000 to come up with the "Get in on it" those slogans must be selling through the roof. (Meanwhile my sister comes up with "I am not interested in cooperation just capitualtion" for free. Sweet.) Hillary then starts playing up the whole "conversation with America" thing that seems to be the new Washington fad. She says,

"I am announcing that I will form an exploratory committee to run for president...I want you to join me not just for the campaign but for a conversation about the future of our country -- about the bold but practical changes we need to overcome six years of Bush administration failures...As a senator, I will spend two years doing everything in my power to limit the damage...Bush can do. But only a new president will be able to undo Bush's mistakes and restore our hope and optimism...renew the promise of America -- the idea that if you work hard you can count on the health care, education, and retirement security that you need to raise your family...these basic values of America...are under attack from this administration...only a new president can regain America's position as a respected leader in the world."

I paraphrased and condensed several paragraphs into what you see above because that is what I want to address. First, what exactly is an "exploratory committee?" It seems to me that an "exploratory committee" is just a group of people telling people what to do, which could indicate the Hilary can't make any decision for herself, and would just be a slave to the "experts" and what is PC at the time. I would rather have a president who can make decisions for him/herself (and go against public opinion at times) based on their intuition and experience. Then Hillary gives the crusader line: "I will not be a tool, I will fight for you, I will stand up for you." That's right, we all believe that seeing as politicians (Republicans and Deomcrats) are so very trustworthy. If Hillary really wanted to limit the "the damage...Bush can do" then why did she vote for the Iraq War in the first place. She only stopped supporting it when it became politically popular to do so.

Rather than presenting concrete plans and solutions, Hillary seeks to sway potential voters by emotion. She sticks to the trite political talking points: she will be the champion of health care, of education, and of retirement security. Translating this campaign rhetoric from Hil-speak to layman’s terms it comes out, universal health care for all, free education, and an expanisve welfare state. One wonders how she will manage this and still keep the budget under control, which was another one of her promises. This of course leads to an even greater redistribution of wealth and higher taxation, a strategy which we all know to yield great success. Hillary continues her campaign pitch by stating the classic rhetoric that she will return "America to a respected leader in the world." This leads me to this thought: The world is full of criminals at this point, such as Islamic jihadists, dictators, and other corrupt indiviuals worldwide. Just as the common criminals and thugs on the streets of America don't respect the authority of police, so the world doesn't respect America. The evil in the world sees America as one of the few bastions of freedom and hope remaining and hate us for it. So world respect is not one of my top priorities right now. Bringing Islamic jihadists and dictators to justice is. When these forces respect America it will be for a different reason. It will not be the false respect that the world community gives those who are Politically Correct, and Politically Popular, but it will be the respect that prey gives to a great hunter.

Al-Malaki Makes Progress

Hopefully Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malaki is starting the long and difficult road toward taking down Muqtada Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army. Yesterday Al-Malaki allowed the a joint strike force of Iraqi and U.S. forces to clean out the Baghdad slum Sadr City. Mahdi Army commanders and grunts plan to melt back into the population, no longer using cell phones, and removing their black Hezbollah-like uniforms. Unfortunately, this will make them harder to find, but it is essential that we deny them a haven. Madhi commanders are also worried about the accurate sweeps that the U.S. is conducting saying, "...they were increasingly concerned about improved U.S. intelligence that has allowed the Americans to successfully target key figures in the militia." If we can keep them off balance and arrest key commanders that will make their attacks easier to disrupt and make the grunts more amenable to laying down thier arms. It will (hopefully) also improve relations between the Sunni and Shiite factions in the Iraqi government now that Al-Malaki has stopped sheltering Muqtada Al-Sadr.

    More
good news today. Sheik Abdul-Hadi al-Darraji, a top aide to Al-Sadr, was arrested by U.S. and Iraqi troops. There is a sign that Al-Malaki and his staff may not be on the same page because advisor Sadiq al-Rikabi told Arab television that, "There was no coordination with the Iraqi political leadership and this arrest was not part of the new security plan...Coordination with the Iraqi political leadership is needed before conducting such operations that draw popular reactions.” This comment could mean several things; it could just be CYA by the advisor, or it could signal a divide between Al-Malaki and his cabinet on how to tackle the Shiite militias. I did find it amusing that bigwig Sheik Abdul-Zahra al-Suweiadi issued a statement saying, “We strongly condemn this cowardly act.” Now I have to ask the good Sheik, what can be more cowardly than blowing up car bombs in a crowded market place to accomplish political goals and attain power? Perhaps the good Sheik, the pious Sheik, can "enlighten" me on his sick, twisted logic.

Even better was Muqtada Al-Sadr's interview to an Italian newspaper. Quick question, why can't we stick a GPS in a video camera, microphone, etc. and then bomb the a**** of these crazy imams, sheiks, and terrorists when they get their candid camera moment! Something to think about. Back to Al-Sadr, who said, “Let them kill us. For a true believer there is no better moment than this to die: Heaven is ensured...”  Another quick question, if he wants to die so much, why the heck doesn't he just park his butt outside the Green Zone in Baghdad and let us nail him. He is so full of himself. Also, it appears Al-Sadr is also a good, pious indivual, as he proclaims that, "...his militias would not fight back during the Muslim holy month of Muharram, saying it was against the faith to kill at that time. Muharram starts Friday for Sunnis and Saturday for Shiites."  So apparently killing Muslims (doesn't say anything about Christians or Jews) during this special month (apparently it is open season after this month) would make one a barbaric, evil, and despicable man. Well I am so glad that Al-Sadr is in touch with his soft, fuzzy, and spiritual side because now we get to kick him while he's down.

Another Useles MSM Poll

A conservative and a liberal were reading the Baltimore Sun this morning (yes people still do that) and observed an article about a new poll done by the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg. The article, entitled "Poll Shows Opposition to Troop Rise in Iraq, states in a rather dramatic (and misleading) way that, "A commanding majority of Americans oppose President Bush's decision to send more troops to Iraq and just over half the country wants Congress to block the move, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found." The liberal's reaction? "Ha! I knew it! The American people have spoken; the American people want a change of strategy, namely pulling out in a "phased withdrawal" because we have already lost!" The conservative's reaction? "Let's read a little more before passing judgment." So in a fine show of bipartisanship, they agree on this course of action and read into the second paragraph, where the article shows Bush's waning support among the American people where, "...more than three-fifths of those surveyed (key phrase) said the war was not worth fighting..."

Now the conservative is somewhat worried and the liberal is crowing his victory to the sky. A few paragraphs later there seems to be another nail in the coffin of the war effort as the article states that, "...about one-fourth of Republicans (where is "of those surveyed"?)...do not believe the war...worth fighting...roughly equal number opposed the troop increase." Now the conservative is really concerned, but he still holds out hope. He thinks that there just has to be a catch buried somewhere in the article! Right? And he is not disappointed. In the ninth of fourteen paragraphs, the article states that the Times/Bloomberg Poll, "...surveyed 1,344 adults nationwide by telephone Saturday through Tuesday. It has a margin of sampling error of three percentage points." Now how can anyone derive the will of a country with 300 million in it with just a survey of 1344 adults?!

Insanity, arrogance and more MSM manipulation are the answers to that question. And of course buried in the very last paragraph is the little fact that, "Forty-one percent said Congress should not attempt to stop Bush, with the rest unsure." That figure is compared to the fifty-one percent oppose Bush's plan. But the common folk knowing that wouldn't fit the media elites plans, just their M.O. When they find something that doesn't fit their agenda, they bury it. They still publish it so they can that they're fair, but that is just CYA. Crazy stuff.

Martin O'Malley's Inauguration

I found a local blog today. It is entitled “The Last Reporter” and is run by Chet Dembeck, who is in his own words is, “...presently unaffiliated with any political party or any corporate media outlet. My goal is to give you unfiltered commentary.” So far he has had some pretty good thoughts about Maryland politics, including this one and this one, both of which cover Martin O’Malley’s inauguration speech and inauguration promises. I have linked the actual speech, there are two parts, from WBAL.com (a local radio station) as well as the transcript from the Maryland government website. The speech itself is a little complicated, you have to click on the radio links near the bottom of the page and download it to your computer to listen to it, but that doesn’t take very long at all. I will add my own thoughts on O’Malley later, but I think that Chet Dembeck pretty much nailed it.

Review of "Enemies"

I just finished reading another outstanding book, “Enemies” by Bill Gertz. “Enemies” is about the intelligence agencies of the United States and how effective they are at their job. So if you want to find out the truth about how many enemy spies are in the US, how successful our enemies are in conducting espionage operations, and just how good the US is at combating these foes. BUY AND READ THIS BOOK! However, if you do not want to be outraged, disgusted, and have to suppress the urge to take every self-serving, incompetent, bureaucratic idiot at the FBI and CIA and shake them like a rag doll, DO NOT BUY AND READ THIS BOOK! Because you will feel above emotions and feel like taking said action.

Bill Gertz pulls no punches in this extremely well-written, informative and disturbing book. Gertz goes into great detail about the hostile regimes facing the United States, such as Russia, China, Iran, Islamic terrorist groups and (surprisingly) Cuba and what the US does to counter these threats, which is about nil. “Enemies” is chock full of Gertz’s own observations, interviews with intelligence officials, and declassified documents which are used to paint a disturbing picture of the US intelligence apparatus. Gertz writes that the biggest problem (of many) that the US intelligence agencies have is the lack of an aggressive, successful counter-intelligence operation (CIO). A good counter-intelligence (CI) program, as defined in “Enemies”, is “...quite simply, the process of identifying and catching foreign spies, either to neutralize them or to exploit knowledge of their activities for one’s own purposes” and “Turning enemy agents --- convincing captured spies to work as double agents rather than go to jail --- is one of the highest objectives of US counter-intelligence.” Unfortunately, Gertz says that CI is one of the United States’ biggest failings.

Gertz writes that our CI failures are caused by complex issues, some of which are near impossible to correct, such as our lack of trustworthy Chinese and Arabic sources. But other problems are far more correctable, and Gertz outlines them in “Enemies.” They include:

(a) serious lack of “humint” or human intelligence agents
        · caused by downsizing of CIA’s humint by the Clinton administration
(covered in Bill Gertz’s book “Betrayal”)

(b) change in philosophy by the CIA of how to conduct intelligence ops and if CI is needed
        · caused in part by Clinton Administration
        · caused in part that CIA never had an aggressive CIO

(c) self-serving bureaucrats preserving careers at the expense of National Security
        · FBI / CIA have repeatedly promoted agents who have blown CIO
        · FBI / CIA have repeatedly covered up disastrous failings to save jobs of bosses
        · FBI / CIA have repeatedly ignored executive orders from the President to correct
          flaws

As a result of all these problems the US is extremely vulnerable and has been fleeced and will continue to be fleeced by enemy regimes. Bill Gertz goes into much greater detail about these issues, even including declassified intelligence reports, than I have (obviously) and since I don’t want to steal his “thunder” I will conclude by saying that Bill Gertz has done a great service to the public in writing this book. Hopefully the issues he brings to light in “Enemies” will be addressed, but I am not very confident. Again, I say BUY AND READ THIS BOOK! You will not regret it.
